2 new Photography Exhibits

The Ross is closed now for Winter Break until January 17th, but I've just hung 2 new exhibits in our satellite galleries (with considerable assistance from the Second Assistant!)

In Beeghly Library we've got luscious floral photography by Julia McLemore, just the thing to brighten up a dreary winter day.

Across the Jaywalk in Mowry Alumni Center, we've got the photography of Moshen Shirzadian, some colorful and vibrant, some sepia and moody, all of it thought provoking!

Both buildings will be open Wednesday & Thursday December 21 & 22 til 5pm, close for a week or so, then re-open January 4th during the week 9am - 5pm. So if you need a quick activity, grab your mittens and stop in!

Almost ready!

We're in the midst of installing 2 new exhibits in the Ross, to open this Thursday, September 29th!

Susan Paulsen, photographer, and Dennison Griffith, painter, will both be speaking on Friday, September 30th at 3:13 in Corns 312. There will be a reception for both artists from 7-9:00pm Friday evening.

Here's a glimpse of the progress our illustrious leader, Justin Kronewetter, is making on installing the photographs with the help of some students in the Gallery Management class. (Katasha on the right, Taurey on the left)

Photographs, Drawings, Mixed Media

We right in the middle of changing 4 exhibitions in all 3 of our venues. First up and complete is the 2011-12 National Colloquium Exhibition, "Sudan: The Cost of Silence" which is currently on view in Gallery 2001/Beeghly Library. Fabulous black and white photographs by Ryan Spencer Reed, giving a face to the suffering. Mr. Reed will be on campus on October 24th to give an illustrated talk about his experiences and his artwork.

Also up and waiting for your perusal is the new exhibit in Mowry Alumni Gallery (in Mowry Alumni Center) titled "Reflections". The drawings and mixed media pieces by Karen Poulson are layered and manipulated, calling for close contemplation. Her work is in the Lobby, Upstairs, and there are 3 pieces in the Conference and Monnett Room as well. She'll be giving a talk on Thursday, September 29th.

School's Out for Summer!

....but all the exhibitions are in place and ready to go! Just to tantalize you, here are photos of the 2 new exhibits in the Ross Museum, which will be re-opening after the summer break on August 18th.

The 1st exhibit is Sculpture by emeritus professor Ebb Haycock. The pieces form a mini-retrospective, and cover a vast range of styles, subjects and media.

The 2nd exhibit is Paintings by alumna Marilyn Ashbrook, and are mezmorizing for their intricate details and juxtaposition of subjects.

Both these exhibits will open August 18th and be on view until September 16th. In the meantime, you can still check out Mowry Alumni Center during the week and see the fabulous photo-collages of Pamela Becker, or cross to the other side of the JayWalk and see an outdoor sculpture in front of Beeghly Library, then wander inside the Library to view more sculpture by Carol Boram-Hays. These 2 exhibits will be open all summer long, until September, too!

Spring at the Ross!

Just as flowers and buds are bursting out all over, so are new exhibits!

There is a wonderful new exhibit of Photo collages in Mowry Alumni Center, by Pamela Becker,'64, titled "Responding to the Land". These pieces are intricately fashioned from cut photos. This exhibit will be on display from now until September 14th, so you can enjoy it in depth!

Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library is the scene of a sculpture exhibit by Carol Boram-Hays titled "Chronic Disquietude". Her pieces utilize reclaimed materials such as concrete and rebar.

Next weekend, Carol will be working on an outdoor installation piece in front of the Library with the help of some of the students. This exhibit will also be on display from now until September.

Finally, the 2011 Senior Fine Arts Majors will be exhibiting their work starting with a reception on Sunday, April 17th at 2:00pm until commencement on May 8th. The work of 20 seniors in a dozen different media is not to be missed, so plan a visit soon!

3 great shows - 1 great price - $0!!

The History of the Future (see previous post) has opened and looks fabulous, but there are 2 more exhibits up and waiting for you!

In Gallery 2001 up in Beeghly Library, we have an exhibit of clothing pieces titled "Alterations". These deal with eating disorders and female body image. The work combines clothing, poetry, embroidery, painting and other techniques to address various issues surrounding the topic. Be sure to pick up the Gallery Guide (in the wall pocket) to get more information about the work, the artist and the whole project.

In Mowry Alumni Center, there is a beautiful exhibit by Dianne Almendinger, from right here in Delaware! The title is "Serenity", and her works use permanent inks, some drawing, on canvas and paper. They're colorful, textural, exciting! On Sunday, March 13th from 2-4pm we'll have a reception for Dianne right there in Mowry, so plan to attend!

Both exhibits are on view now, Alterations will be up until March 17th, and Dianne's exhibit will be up until March 31st.
